Weekend Finds 5:26:14

I know what you’re thinking. “Annie, here you are, posting weekend finds on a Monday. Again.” BUT it’s Memorial Day weekend. So, I’m going to say it’s still the weekend. So there. Here’s what I’ve been eyeing this week.

1. Food Memoirs

Foodie Memoirs from the Kitchn // Weekend Finds on Serious Crust
My summer reading list just grew by three.

I’ve been really looking forward to reading Molly Wizenberg’s Delancey for a while now, because I just love her writing. Love it. But I’m now excited to add two more books to my summer reading list, thanks to the Kitchn’s little article on new foodie memoirs.

2. Carrot Pancakes with Salted Yogurt

Carrot Pancakes from Bon Appetit // Weekend Finds on Serious Crust
I love the color of these carrot pancakes!

My mom came to visit me (thanks, Mom!) and she brought her most recent issue of Bon Appetit to show me some recipes. This one for carrot pancakes jumped off the page at me, and I am itching to make it.

3. What to know before buying strawberries

All about Strawberries on Food52 // Weekend Finds on Serious Crust
Educate yourselves about strawberries!

I like this list from Food52 linking to articles all about strawberries: different varieties, what to do when they’re over the hill, freezing them, and roasting them. I also like this post also about strawberries. Ingredient education, guys! I can’t wait for Hood season in Portland. It’s a close second to rhubarb season.

4. Crispy Skinned Salmon

I love the crunch of crispy fish skin.

These days, whenever we make fish (usually trout), I peel the skin off and fry it up afterwards. I love the crispy skin, the fishy, crunchy, slightly burnt flavor. And I never seem to be able to get that same result when I just pan fry a filet. But I’m going to try Russ Parson’s technique, and enjoy more crispy fish skin.

5. Hibiscus Rum Buck

Hibiscus Rum Buck on Honestly YUM // Weekend Finds on Serious Crust
This cocktail looks so beautiful, I can’t even.

This cocktail from Honestly Yum is looking so crazy good to me right now. This might have something to do with the fact that when I was in California last weekend, I drank as much jamaica as I usually drink in maybe a year. So combining a little hibiscus syrup (a la jamaica) with some rum, lime, and ginger beer sounds delicious, as well as incredibly refreshing.

Weekend Finds 12:8:13

Well, we’re officially over the Thanksgiving hump. In this weekend finds, we’re on to the world of Christmas, and starting to think about decorations and gifting.

1. Meyer Lemon and Sage Hot Toddy

Meyer Lemon and Sage Hot Toddy

I’m having trouble thinking of much else other than hot, wintery, alcoholic beverages. The other day, I was cozied up on the couch with my big sweater, a blanket, some tea, and my knitting, and my roommate Sophie said to me, “You are made for winter.” I think it’s true, I am. I love being warm and cozy in big sweaters sipping warm drinks. I love this time of year because you get to drink things like this Meyer lemon and sage hot toddy.

2. DIY Limoncello

DIY Limoncello

A while ago when Jonah and I went to Toro Bravo, we were gifted some limoncello after we had to wait a little bit. And I must say, I really enjoyed it. So, while we’re on the topic of lemony alcoholic beverages, I think this DIY Limoncello would make a great gift. Plus, it’ll be a nice light after-dinner drink for those heavy Christmas dinners.

3. Geometric Ornaments

Geometric Ornaments featured on Design*Sponge

Yesterday Jonah and I went with our roommates to get our Christmas tree! And it is all now decorated with Carmelle’s ornaments. When I get to a point in my life where I’m collecting Christmas ornaments (maybe I should say if I get to that point), I like to think I would collect things like these beautiful geometric ornaments featured on Design*Sponge. I especially like the second ones, by FlaneursPockets on Etsy.

4. DIY Vanilla Extract

DIY Vanilla from HonestlyYUM

I’ve heard of lots of people gifting homemade vanilla extract for the holidays. And I think it’s a great idea. But before I read this post on HonestlyYUM, I never really thought about using a) different types of vanilla or b) different kinds of liquor. It might be cool to give people a “flight” of vanilla, as it were.

5. Winter Salad from 101 Cookbooks

Winter Salad from 101 Cookbooks

Sometimes in winter I have trouble making an interesting salad. I mostly just use mixed greens, dried cranberries, candied nuts, and some cheese. Same old, same old. BUT recently I’ve started using delicata squash in everything, including salads, after eating a delicious salad at Grain & Gristle. This salad from 101 Cookbooks not only looks unlike anything I’ve made before, but it also has delicata squash in it! Yum.

Friday Finds 7:12:13

Please forgive the lack of posts I’ve been having lately! We were in Chicago last week, and I’m moving this weekend – so between the travel, the packing, the unpacking, the more packing, the even more unpacking, the settling into somewhere new, and saying goodbye to somewhere old, there hasn’t been much time. I still managed to get to the Friday Finds!

1. The Publican, Chicago, IL

Jonah and I ate at The Publican with my dad and Darla the night we got into Chicago. The space was very cool and the food was phenomenal. I recommend the pork belly.

2. Summer Cocktail

This cocktail over on A Beautiful Mess looks absolutely perfect for a hot summer evening. It also looks super easy: just pineapple juice, mint, cucumber juice, and rum!

3. Restaurant Passport

Restaurant Passport

I spotted this idea on Pinterest, and while the original site seems to not be working, the idea is still brilliant. Jonah and I often have the “where should we go for dinner?” debate. This is a great idea to remind you of the places you’ve been wanting to go, and I think the idea of marking them off once you’ve been is really sweet.

4. Ways to use Hummus

Hummus Deviled Eggs

This slideshow from Bon Appetit with 10 ways to use hummus is brilliant. Hummus in salad dressing? Hummus in deviled eggs? There are certainly a few ideas I’d never have thought of.

5. Grilled Portobello Tacos

Mushroom tacos sound delicious to me. Grilled portobello tacos? Even better. I’m not going to make my own tortillas the way Sarah from A House in the Hills did, but still. These look delicious.

6. Sun-dried Tomato Pesto

Sun-dried Tomato Pesto

When I studied in London, I found this sun-dried tomato pesto at the grocery store near my flat that I ate all the time. I mean all the time. As in probably multiple times a week. This recipe for sun-dried tomato pesto looks like it’d be worth a shot, and may get me that much closer to recreating my favorite.
