Weekend Finds 6:8:14

Happy weekend! I hope it’s as beautiful wherever you are as it is here in Oregon. Enjoy these weekend finds!

1. Using Strawberry Tops

Use your strawberry tops // Weekend Finds on Serious Crust
Strawberry infused water sounds perfect on a hot day.

I always feel bad tossing overripe strawberries or strawberry tops. Sometimes I toss them in smoothies, but this strawberry water seems like a perfectly refreshing idea to have in my back pocket this summer.

2. Homemade Teriyaki Sauce

Homemade Teriyaki Sauce // Weekend Finds on Serious Crust
Look at that teriyaki glaze on that chicken.

I’m into teriyaki sauce, especially in the summer on top of some grilled salmon or grilled chicken or other grilled things. I’d love to try making it myself using this recipe from A Cozy Kitchen.

3. Camping Trip Recipes

Camping Recipes // Weekend Finds on Serious Crust
Charred corn with avocado and lime? I’ll eat that while camping.

We’re planning a few camping trips this summer, and I have a feeling some of these recipes might come in handy. I’m especially interested in the bulgogi jerky, the charred corn and avocado salad, and the roasted potatoes with za’atar.

4.  Sangria Time

The best wine for your sangria // Weekend Finds on Serious Crust
Now you know what wine to pick for you sangria.

I often find myself wondering what wines are best for what. I’ve never made Sangria, but I sure do love drinking it. This article over at the Kitchn can help you figure out which wine is best in your Sangria this summer. (And here’s a recipe to help you make it, too.)

5. Food Rules Print

Food Print // Weekend Finds on Serious Crust
Food: Don’t waste it!

I love love love this print. I’ve seen it a few places, and it just doesn’t get old. I think it’s perfect for a kitchen with some vintage touches.

1. Pie Alternative

Pecan Pie Ice Cream // Weekend Finds, Serious Crust by Annie Fassler
Pecan pie ice cream from A Beautiful Mess

Pies are great, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes it’s nice to have a little something else on your Thanksgiving dessert menu. This ice cream looks just lovely – I love the cream cheese in the base and the fact that, yes, there’s still pecan pie in it.

2. Fall soups

A Lighter Pumpkin Soup // Weekend Finds, Serious Crust by Annie Fassler
Pumpkin soup with roasted garlic and leeks from Recipes a Volonte

I love a creamy fall soup, but sometimes they’re too heavy. This roasted garlic, pumpkin, and leek soup seems a little lighter (milk instead of cream, and only a half a cup), and would be perfect for a Thanksgiving appetizer or any other fall night. (Also, a lot of the recipes on Recipes a Volonte look lovely.)

3. DIY Leather Coasters

DIY Leather Coasters from Design*Sponge

Jonah and I have recently made a couple of trips to Scrap, a bits and pieces craft store a block from our house. And they have leather scraps. So maybe, you know, I could make these leather coasters. Talk about a neat present for the holidays.

4. Sweet Potato Gratin

Sweet Potato Gratin // Weekend Finds, Serious Crust by Annie Fassler
Sweet Potato Gratin with chanterelles and cheese

I’ve been looking for a gratin recipe to make. Gratins are lovely for the winter – take root vegetables (or even something like cabbage), basically smother it in bechamel sauce, and bake it. Could there be something more rich and warm and comforting? Nope. This sweet potato one with cheese and chanterelles looks so rich and scrumptious, I might have to convince my mother to add it to our Thanksgiving menu.

5. Pie Trimmings

These old pie trimming tips look so beautiful, and just like something I’d use for my pie crusts. I particularly like the cornucopias and the ruffle effect.

Weekend Finds 9:21:13

This weekend’s finds (and many of my finds lately) seem to be about learning. What’s the best way to load the dishwasher? Where can I take an online class about sauces? What about the best caesar salad? I’m finding lately that instead of thinking my ways (though tried and true) are best, I am more open to trying others’ recommendations.

1. Dishwasher loading

Weekend Finds // Serious Crust by Annie Fassler
Dishwasher loading tips? Yes, thanks.

This find is mostly dedicated to my mother, who my sisters and I always made fun of for being less than stellar at loading the dishwasher. But there’s always more to learn. For example, who knew to stagger your large and small plates? The rest of Chow’s YouTube channel is filled with videos of tips, etc.

2. Craftsy

Weekend Finds // Serious Crust by Annie Fassler
Sauce Class over on Craftsy

Online classes are always kind of a gamble. You never know if it’s going to be worth what you’re paying for it. But the classes on Craftsy look pretty nice. You get downloadable recipes, and you can come back to revisit the material anytime.

3. A Fancy-Ass Caesar Salad

Weekend Finds // Serious Crust by Annie Fassler
I’ll take one Fancy-Ass Caesar Salad, please.

I always judge a restaurant by their caesar salad (let me just say, I really like the caesar-esque salad at my new place of work). And I always wish I made caesar salad more often myself, but I can never quite get that fancy feel. A Cozy Kitchen’s new post teaches how to make your own dressing, croutons, etc. to make the perfect salad.

4. Color Pop Cutting Boards

Weekend Finds // Serious Crust by Annie Fassler
Cutting boards that pop with color

Apparently I’m on a cutting board kick lately. Last week it was pyrography, this week it’s color pop. I think it’s just because I love the idea of personalizing your belongings, making your kitchen (and your home, and your life) completely unique and 100% yours. This idea from A Beautiful Mess is a cute way to add color and tie in colors from your kitchen/home.

5. Chomp

Weekend Finds // Serious Crust by Annie Fassler
Chomp! A new food journal in Portland, OR.

Chomp is a new little food journal. Each issue (this is just the first one) will feature interviews with and recipes by 3 Portland chefs, plus a game of 20 questions. The first issue features Nong Poonsukwattana, Pascal Sauton, and John Gorham.

Weekend Finds 9:15:13

With my new job taking up my weekends, I’m having a bit of a hard time getting these weekly roundups to you on Friday But I am going to try harder! That being said, I’m going to start calling them Weekend Finds instead of Friday Finds, so hopefully I feel less guilty writing them on Sunday night.

1. Homemade Milano Cookies

Friday Finds // Serious Crust by Annie Fassler
Homemade Milano Cookies by The Live In Kitchen

When I was younger, my mother loved Milano cookies. We would occasionally have a bag of them in the pantry, and after dinner I would sneak in and eat one… or two… or three. They are probably my favorite cookies for dipping in coffee and tea. This homemade version looks absolutely beautiful.

2. Zucchini overload

Friday Finds // Serious Crust by Annie Fassler
10 different things to do with your bounty of zucchini.

These days, there are those whose gardens are overflowing with gigantic zucchini, and after the 10th batch of zucchini bread, wish they could think of something else to do. Here are 10 other ideas.

3. Squash blossom quesadillas with tomatillo salsa

Friday Finds // Serious Crust by Annie Fassler
Zucchini blossom quesadillas

Speaking of zucchini, if you’ve still got any blossoms left, or some small fruits attached to the blossom, I would certainly jump on this quesadilla train immediately.

4. Personalized Pyrography Cutting Boards

Friday Finds // Serious Crust by Annie Fassler
Wood-burned cutting boards

As soon as I saw this, I was dying over how beautiful and simple it was to make your own personalized wood-burned cutting board. If I have my way, I know what everyone I know will be getting for Chrismakkah. Also, pyrography is an awesome word.

5. Pluot and Poppy Yogurt Bowl

Friday Finds // Serious Crust by Annie Fassler
Pluot Poppy Yogurt Bowl

I am consistently pleasantly surprised at the unique flavor combinations over on 101 cookbooks. She combines foods in a really wonderful way, and this pluot and poppy yogurt bowl is no different. And her photos are so beautiful. Now I just need to go pick up some pluots.
